There are numerous reasons for discoloration of the skin. Discoloration of the skin is basically a problem with the skin’s pigmentation. Normally your skin should be an even color to be considered healthy skin. Your skin can have light spots or dark spots, known as hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation, respectively. These issues are not usually bad for your health, but they can be annoying for people who suffer from them. Melanocytes in our skin form melanin which colors our skin. Everyone has the same amount of Melanocytes in their skin, but there are certain skin factors that determine how many of these Melanocytes are active. People with lighter skin will have less of them active than darker skinned people.

What Causes Skin Discoloration
There are both things inside and outside of the body that can cause a variation in pigmentation of the skin. Inside the body things we digest can affect our skin on the outside. Some medications, including birth control, can include side effects that cause skin discoloration. Age changes the way our body works, which can lead to skin problems, like those with pigmentation. Birthmarks count as an issue with pigmentation. Some people, though very rarely, are born without any melanin in their skin, making them an albino. The technical term for this is Albinism. Outside causes of skin discoloration include freckles, which are sometimes caused by sun exposure, and scars. You can get scars from a number of things, like scratches or surgery, and they usually leave a light discoloration on the skin. There are also age spots and stretch marks.

Sometimes skin discoloration is caused by a growth on the skin. Growths should be watched, as some can be cancerous or contagious. Moles are dark or light flush or bump marks on your skin
